How to Choose Your Fiber Craft: 5 Questions to Get You Started

So you’re curious about fiber crafts — but not sure where to begin? Whether it’s knitting, crochet, macramé, weaving, or something else entirely, starting a new creative practice can feel a bit overwhelming. In Episode 2 of the podcast, I talk through 5 key questions to help you choose a fiber craft that fits your personality, lifestyle, and goals.

Here’s a few questions to start asking yourself:

1. 💛 What Are You Drawn To?

Start by noticing what catches your eye. Do you love the cozy look of chunky knit blankets? The delicate detail of lace crochet? The boho texture of macramé wall hangings? Let your visual taste guide you — often your aesthetic preferences are a clue to what will keep you inspired.

Ask yourself:“What kinds of fiber art do I find beautiful or exciting?”

2. ⏳ How Much Time Do You Have?

Some crafts are perfect for quick, portable projects (hello crochet keychains!), while others require more time and space (like weaving on a loom). Think about how much time you realistically have — and how you want crafting to fit into your week.

Ask yourself:“Am I looking for something I can do in short bursts, or do I want a slow, immersive process?”

3. 💸 What’s Your Budget?

All crafts have startup costs, but some are more beginner-friendly than others. Crochet and knitting usually need just a hook or needles and some yarn. Macramé requires cord and a place to hang your project. Weaving might involve looms and accessories.

Ask yourself:“What can I comfortably invest in materials right now?”(And remember — you don’t have to buy everything at once!)

4. 🧠 What Do You Want From Crafting?

This is a big one. Are you looking for stress relief? A creative outlet? A sense of accomplishment? Connection to tradition or community? Different crafts offer different benefits — and sometimes it's not about the final product, but how the process makes you feel.

Ask yourself:“How do I want crafting to make me feel?”

5. 🪢 What Kind of Maker Are You?

Some people love structure and step-by-step patterns. Others prefer to freestyle, experiment, and let the work evolve. Your personality plays a big part in which craft will stick.

Ask yourself:“Do I like following instructions, or do I prefer to play and explore?”

Try, Tinker, and Trust Yourself

The beautiful thing about fiber crafts is that there’s no “right” starting point. You’re allowed to try different things. You’re allowed to make mistakes. You’re allowed to change your mind. Every stitch teaches you something new — even if it’s not your forever craft.

So go ahead: follow your curiosity, listen to your hands, and trust that the right craft will find you when you’re ready for it.

And remember — I’m right here with you.
