Crafting a Space That Works for You: Setting Up & Storing Your Supplies

In Episode 3 of the podcast, we’re getting into something every maker eventually has to figure out — how to set up a craft space that works for you, no matter how much (or how little) room you have.Whether you’re lucky enough to have a whole room or you’re making do with a corner of the dining table, the key is this: you don’t need a perfect space to be a happy, productive crafter.

Here’s a little recap of what we covered in the episode, plus some extra ideas and tips:

Why Your Craft Space Matters

Your craft space doesn’t need to be big or Pinterest-perfect — but it should feel welcoming. When your space works for you, you’ll feel more inspired, less stressed, and more likely to sit down and create.

Your space is an invitation to yourself. Even if it’s just a tray of supplies tucked away under the bed, it’s yours.

Storage Solutions That Actually Work

Let’s be honest: fiber crafts come with stuff. Yarn, tools, thread, scissors, half-finished projects — and all of it needs a home. Here are a few of my favourite practical and budget-friendly ideas:

  • Clear boxes or drawers: See what you have at a glance.

  • Baskets & bins: Great for grab-and-go crafting.

  • Pegboards or wall hooks: Get tools and supplies off your surfaces and onto display.

  • Repurposed furniture: Old bookshelves, kitchen trolleys, or side tables can make perfect yarn storage.

💡 Pro tip: Group by project or type — for example, all macramé cords in one bin, or a box dedicated to ongoing knitting projects.

My Own Craft Space

In the episode, I shared a bit about how I’ve set up my own space.

What’s most important is that it feels inviting, it works for you and easy to return to. And yes, sometimes it still gets messy. That’s part of the fun.

Make It Yours

Your space should reflect you. Add a candle, a photo, a small plant. Hang a piece you made. You don’t need a lot of money or space — just a little intention.

If all you have right now is a storage box under the bed, that’s valid. You’re still a crafter.
